Wallitsch Art Gallery Artist Statement Shirley Wallitsch

My art is a reflection of my journey from the vast landscapes of Wyoming to the bustling Northeastern United States, where my creativity is deeply intertwined with the essence of creation and the human spirit. Drawing from my roots, I explore a diverse range of techniques that allow me to follow my intuition and respond emotionally to my surroundings.

Nature is my primary muse, influencing both the vibrant colors and intricate textures that define my work. From the delicate shades of flowers to the rich hues of minerals, each color carries its own emotional resonance. By exploring their interplay, I create artwork that evolves with each stroke and layer.

I work across various mediums, continuously experimenting with techniques such as splattering, pouring, and layering. These explorations yield different textures and visual dimensions, which I refine into cohesive series that capture the multifaceted nature of our world.

My artistic vision oscillates between abstraction and representation, allowing me to interpret and convey the essence of both natural and emotional landscapes. Through this exploration, I aim to evoke a deep sense of connection and introspection in those who experience my art.

Shirley Wallitsch – Biography

Shirley Wallitsch, a Wyoming-born artist, has forged a remarkable career deeply intertwined

with nature and avant-garde artistic expression. Her artistic journey commenced under the

guidance of a mentor in Wyoming who introduced her to a rich tapestry of arts, music, poetry,

and philosophical insights, laying the foundation for her early creative pursuits.

In her twenties, Wallitsch found herself at the Rochester Folk Art Guild in upstate New York,

where she immersed herself in a vibrant artistic community and began her exploration into

painting. This transformative period also provided her with an opportunity to apprentice under

a painter from New York City and refine her skills further at the Art Students League.

Driven by a desire to sustain her artistic endeavors, Wallitsch ventured into sculpting large-scale

artworks using vines and wood sourced from her natural surroundings. Her innovative

sculptures quickly garnered attention, adorning prestigious storefronts such as Bonwit Teller in

New York City during the culturally rich era of the 1980s.

Continuing her artistic evolution, Wallitsch relocated to Westchester, where she established

“Vine Works,” creating sculpted furniture, baskets, and other artistic pieces. Her creations

gained popularity among floral shops in Connecticut and beyond. She received diverse

commissions, ranging from a 60-foot Sukkah in Greenwich, CT, to designing elaborate wine

rooms and international window displays.

In 1997, Wallitsch moved to New Jersey and dedicated herself to painting. By 2020, she opened

her own gallery, Wallitsch Art, showcasing her profound artistic journey and featuring her latest

works.

“My paintings, which vacillate between abstraction and representation, always begin from nature. Growing up in Wyoming, I was always in awe of the natural environment. Now, as a resident in the densely populated American Northeast, I still find myself inspired by the landscape, from the natural wonder of stars, mountains, and flowers to the built environment. I also represent scenes and landscapes well beyond my immediate surroundings, such as volcanic eruptions or compositions created in response to the war in the Ukraine, Israel , Global warming current affairs that effect all humanity.

In my practice, I am constantly exploring new techniques. I allow myself to follow my own intuition and be led by my emotional response to a scene. The vibrant colors I work with are also derived from nature, from the hyperbolic hues of flowers to the intense coloration of minerals. Each chroma has its own resonance and through their juxtapositions, I can develop a complex emotional landscape. I work exclusively with oil paints, but am continuously evolving my approach to incorporate new ideas like splattering, pouring, and layering. Different textures emerge from these experiments and once I find a methodology I like, I refine it into a series of paintings.

Through the combination of nature and emotion, my constantly evolving practice captures the multifaceted quality of our world.”
